Medical Insurance

All visitors should be covered by medical insurance. If you are applying for the 12-Month Barbados Welcome Stamp, proof of adequate medical insurance is a prerequisite for approval of your application. Many factors have an impact on the cost of medical insurance: your age, your level of coverage, your deductible payment, and whether you are prepared to pay for a full year’s coverage up front. There are a wide range of insurance products aimed at the needs of travellers, so you will want to shop around carefully.

We recommend an insurance policy that is specifically designed around the needs of remote workers and digital nomads. Remote workers who are not in their home country often fall between the cracks, without proper access to insurance or national safety nets. We have formed a partnership with Safety Wing, a global health insurance provider that understands the needs of remote workers because they are all remote workers and digital nomads themselves. Safety Wing travel medical insurance will cover people from all over the world while they are outside their home country.

You can get even more comprehensive coverage from Safety Wing

Other options

Some policies are aimed at short term vacation travellers and they may be quite limited in the amount of coverage that they provide because they are calculated on the anticipated needs of someone who is only very temporarily away from more comprehensive insurance coverage in their country of origin. Insurance coverage designed for two week vacations is seldom a good choice for a stay of several months to a year or more.

At the other end of the scale are policies designed for expatriates from Europe or North America who are posted by their companies or governments to long term stints in other parts of the world. These policies tend to provide comprehensive coverage that includes such things as  maternity plans, dental plans, out-patient plans or a repatriation plan, but it comes at a cost. The plans are usually priced according to the budgets of governments or multinational corporations so you can expect to be charged between US$3,000 and US$10,000 per year. This can be fine if your employer is paying for your medical insurance, but if you have to shoulder the cost yourself we recommend Safety Wing.
